Demelza: Book 2 (Poldark Saga)
Published in Paperback by Pan Books Ltd (May, 2003)
Author: Winston Graham
Average review score:

Love and Sorrow
This is the second novel in the Poldark series.
Winston Graham has done a superb job of recreating life in late 18th century Cornwall. This novel tells of Demelza and Ross
Poldark, as well as continuing the story of Verity Poldark, Ross' cousin, and her family. The Poldarks experience a tragedy in this book. Demelza, born in poverty, is learning how to adjust to her new station in life as the wife of a gentleman. I would strongly suggest reading the Poldark books in order so you can understand why the characters act as they do.
See my review of Ross Poldark, the first book.

The Diary and Letters of Kaethe Kollwitz
Published in Paperback by Northwestern University Press (December, 1988)
Authors: Hans Kollwitz, Kaethe Kollwitz, and Richard Winston
Average review score:

For fellow Kollwitz worshippers...
For anyone out there who also worships Kaethe Kollwitz and her extraordinary work, this book is a must-read. Edited by the son that lived--Hans--"The Diary and Letters of Kaethe Kollwitz" provides an intimate portrait of the woman who lived behind the drawings in her own words. This book breathed life and personality into somebody who has been one of my greatest artistic influences. I found it exceptionally moving to be able to share her emotions, thoughts and tragedies in this way.

Does Training for the Disadvantaged Work?: Evidence from the National Jtpa Study
Published in Paperback by Urban Institute Press (19 March, 1996)
Authors: Larry L. Orr, Howard S. Bloom, Stephen H. Bell, Fred Doolittle, Winston Lin, and George Cave
Average review score:

A Solid Study: Best of Breed
The publisher's description is very accurate. This is the best study ever conducted on the impact of job training for the disadvantaged. Basically, study finds very modest successes for certain groups of adults, women in particular, but does not show general success. To put it mildly, most government job training programs are abysmal failures, hiding behind meaningless statistics (with no control groups for comparison, and methods of data collection that overstate success). This study actually provides a randomly assigned control group for comparison!

By now, 2003, the study is quite dated. JTPA is a dead program, but its successor is still living. Despite the hype, the Workforce Investment Act is not much different in terms of the actual services being delivered (and by many of the same providers or individuals). The main difference between then and now is the process for participant selection, some degree of integration and/or co-location of services, and the methods of paying for support services. Unfortunately, for mainly political reasons, the WIA program will probably not be subjected to the same level of rigorous scrutiny as found in this book. This study is an outstanding example of how a program evaluation should be done. For that reason alone, it should be standard reading for practioners in workforce development and in program evaluation.

As the performance analyst assigned to the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) at the Legislative Budget Board in Austin, I found this book to be a superb reference and guide to the program and its performance. When I became TWC's first director of planning, I ordered it for the agency library. It is a tragedy that few practitioners have read it, much less addressed its findings.

Photographic masterpiece
A beautiful collection of pictures which will delight anyone interested in this area of upstate New York. The author has a style that is at once easy to read and engrossing. She is obviously a sophisticated individual and I hope to see more of her in print.

Transportation Economics and Policy
An excellent choice for anyone who is interested in transportation. The essays range from issues related to developing countries to those that are pertinent to the US. While this is not exactly a beginner's book it is very easy to read with some background in economics or engineering.

The Faces of Homoeopathy
Published in Hardcover by Great Auk Publishing (10 April, 1999)
Author: Julian Winston
Average review score:

The Truth About Homeopathy
Julian Winston's novel is the most in-depth and informative discussion on homeopathy that I have come across. The book makes good on its claim to insightfully delve into the fundamental philosophy of homeopathy. Also, Winston tackles the important and controversial question of scientific rigor that plagues this medical breakthrough. He makes it systematically clear how the medical philosophy of homeopathy is scientifically rigorous. Also mentioned are the innovative medical thinkers known as the original homoeopaths, the decline of homeopathy at the beginning of the 20th century, and the resurgence of this medical philosophy towards the end of this same century. It is ideal for those readers attempting to gain greater medical recognition of homeopathy or for those just interested in the history of this innovative healthcare technique. If one is looking for in-depth inforamtion on homeopathy that is historical, academic, and interesting, then The Faces of Homeopathy is in my opinion the best book to buy.
